Gardening Opportunity with DC Central Kitchen
Today I had the great pleasure of working with the wonderful people at DC Central Kitchen. Food security is something that is very important to me and I feel I have the privilege and obligation to aid those in need. Although I’m unable to travel to Gaza at the moment, I’m fortunate to have many local volunteer opportunities wherever I am.
In my freshman year, I was introduced to DC Central Kitchen through my school. On a service day, I, along with dozens of my classmates, volunteered at one of DC Central Kitchen’s many kitchens. There, we washed and chopped vegetables and fruits.
Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, DC Central Kitchen has suspended all indoor volunteer opportunities. Luckily, I was able to find an alternative— a gardening alternative! Though DC Central Kitchen doesn’t own the garden I volunteered at, they partner with dozens of local gardens and farms in their pursuit of food security.
Today, I volunteered at the beautiful Franciscan Monastery. I spent my day mostly harvesting herbs and leafy greens including kale and cabbages.
Overall, I’d say it was an extremely fulfilling experience because I was able to get a taste of the pride that comes with gardening while also having an impact on local food security.
