Helping to provide the hungry in Gaza with fresh food and a sense of self-worth

Supporting human rights, collaboratively

Greenhouses For Gaza is a project that’s primary goal is to provide fresh and healthy food for those living under occupation in Gaza. We raise money to build hydroponic greenhouses that not only provide fresh and healthy food, but also a sense of self-worth through gardening.

Our funds go directly to Anera (American Near East Refugee Aid), a local Washington DC non-profit whose primary mission is to aid vulnerable communities in Palestine, Lebanon, and Jordan. With the funds, incredible people at Anera are able to build rooftop, hydropnic greenhouses.

Meet me, Griffin Abdo

I am a high school student from Washington DC. I care about the well-being of Palestinians because my late grandfather was a Palestinian refugee.

My Grandfather, Mathhar Y. Abdo, passed away in November of 2020 at the age of 91. In addition to being an American veteran and loyal patriot, he was also a Palestinian refugee with fervent love for his homeland. He is the reason I am so passionate about aiding Palestine, and it is in his honor that I launched Greenhouses for Gaza.

How Greenhouses For Gaza Started

Over the summer of 2020, I got in contact with Anera. I had an existing passion for the well-being of the Palestinian people and I wanted to specifically help in their need for fresh and healthy food.

Anera told me of some of their past projects regarding food. I learned about family-owned greenhouses that were built on land in Gaza. Unfortunately, due to high population density, there is little room to do more of such greenhouses.

Then, I was told about an immensely successful rooftop greenhouse they built at a women’s center in Gaza. Together, we decided it would be a fantastic idea to build more rooftop greenhouses and our project was born.

Rooftop Greenhouse at the Women’s Center

This successful single project sparked the idea for our project. This rooftop greenhouse provided fresh and healthy food for the building’s residents and the local community. Our goal is to expand on the success of this single project.

Hydroponic Agriculture

Hydroponic cultivation is a great and sustainable way to ensure food security and nutrition.

Family-Owned Greenhouses

Although we initially planned to build rooftop greenhouses on big buildings like the women's center, due to COVID-related issues, Anera’s agricultural programs manager decided that building greenhouses atop family homes would sustainably make use of our 2020 funds.
